To kick off 2019, I accompanied some of my family on a trip to sunny Thailand. We flew to Chiang Mai iand stayed there for 2 days, before adjourning to Chiang Rai for 2 more. It turned out to be a pretty relaxing trip, and a meaningful one for my father as well.

Short footnote about my family: Father had 7 siblings and this was the first trip in DECADES that he got to travel abroad with 4 of them. So this trip was more about them having this rare family time together after so many years.

By day we parted company – the aunties and uncles went up into the mountains, delved into the night markets and explored the borders of Thailand, while my father and I went the pub-hopping route and did our own booze-filled exploration instead. The only time we joined up with the rest of the family was for meals.
By night, we gathered at one of our hotel rooms for quality family time with tons of nostalgia (something like an extended CNY reunion dinner) .

In short – I felt the entire trip was extremely invigorating and pleasant. It was good for my father to get together with his siblings once in a while. The hotels were well-chosen and clean, and they were centrally located. Thumbs up to my aunties for the excellent planning!

Being an organizational freak that I am, this blog will explore both facets of our trip – playfully termed the booze route and the non-booze (scenic) route; to present to readers a more well-rounded description of what travelers can expect in both Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.
This is a 2-parter, so follow the links for Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai below to check out what we were up to.
